Total Maximum Daily Load Program
The mission of the Modeling and TMDL (or Total Maximum Daily Load) Branch is to restore or protect the biological integrity of the state’s aquatic resources. Our goal is to provide sound science-based solutions to inform permitting, management, and operational action necessary to ensure the state’s aquatic resources achieve or sustain their best attainable uses.
A TMDL is the maximum amount of a
pollutant that a waterbody can receive and
continue to meet water quality standards.
The Clean Water Act requires the state to develop a list of
waterbodies that do not meet one or more applicable water
quality standards and for which TMDLs are needed.
Mississippi’s Section 303(d) List of Impaired Water Bodies identifies impaired water bodies and establishes a priority ranking for such waters, taking into account the severity of the pollution and the uses to be made of the water bodies. The Section 303(d) listing requirement applies to water bodies impaired by point and nonpoint sources.
